Hello! Meet Joy!

It’s my joyful, jellyfish spirit character for my little Bowl of Mystery project ;D

Character design & illustration process!

My first sketch of this happy spirit!

2nd pass: trying to figure out her shapes :0

3rd pass: defining her costume! Super inspired by extravagant parade and fashion jellyfish costumes!

4th pass: adjustments and not liking some things.

Lineart pass: simplification and finalising her design!

Final illustration! Joy’s powers involve a combination of water, bubbles and wind! I might iterate her some more if I feel like it but that’s all for this piece :’D

Reflection on the process & Bowl of Mystery so far

Took me a while to get to this point as I was also roughly iterating on the remaining 5 character designs at the same time. It was pretty challenging!

I’m at the point where I need to finalise and create at least one polished illustration for each character design! I don’t really want to be bogged down making lots of “perfect” character sheets, expression sheets and turnarounds though. Having done and attempted that before, I’ll just completely lose motivation, interest and burn out! :<

For this project I’ve begun to lose steam and interest but I’ll get the art done, get used to drawing the characters and maybe iterate them further. So look forward to my slow progress in that! :’)

Stressing that I don’t think I’d use these characters again after this character design project is done but who knows!
